The mixtape “Evolution of Rap” is meant to convey the change that has occurred across the rap genre over the past 30 years. One of the rules I made for myself while making this playlist was to make sure the songs were in chronological order to really represent the “evolution” aspect of the playlist. The playlist starts in the year 1980 with the Sugarhill Gang and their upbeat rhymes. The playlist then transitions to the rage-filled political rap from groups like KRS-One and N.W.A. The next transition is to Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and Eminem. The beats in Dr. Dre’s songs are what sets them apart from other rap at the time. His beats to this day are still some of the catchiest. The final transition is into rap about success which is one of the most common themes of modern rap. I chose the songs “N****s in Paris” by Kanye West and Jay-Z and “Started from the bottom” by Drake. This mixtape was fun to put together because it was music I was interested in and enjoy listening to. The implicit argument of this mixtape is that music changes as society changes and there have been many societal changes in the past 30 years that have been represented by changes in the music scene.
